Charging

Nickel-Metal hydride cells are more sensitive to heat than Ni-cd cells, so be sure not to over charge them, which may cause them to vent. It is recommended that you charge these cells on a battery charger that has an adjustable Peak Detection Point set to .01 to .02 volts, lowering the possibility of overcharging. If you use a charger that does not allow you to lower the peak detection setting (less Negative Delta Peak), charge at a lower amp rate (2 to 3 amps) and closely monitor the cells' voltage and temperature. Nickel-Metal hydride cells will quickly get hot after their voltage stops rising during charging. Heating your battery pack up past ambient room temperature indicates an overcharged condition, and will damage the cells.

Discharging

It is not necessary to "deep discharge" your cells after use, for these cells do not develop a discharge "memory" like Ni-Cd cells. In fact, it is recommended that if you are storing these cells for more than a few days that you keep some charge left in them. If you want to completely discharge them, use a tray that takes each cell down individually, minimizing the chances of reversing a weak cell.

On the track

Although Ni-Cd batteries give higher average voltage numbers when tested on matching machines, this is due to Ni-Cd's having a high initial "peak" voltage, which quickly burns off after a lap or two. The Nickel-Metal hydride cells actually carry more usable voltage over their entire discharge cycle. You'll notice that Nickel-Metal hydride cells have much more punch later in your run.

Storage

Store your Nickel-Metal hydride cells with some voltage in them. Do not dead-short them, or store them on a resistor. You can safely run three cycles per day with Ni-MH cells, allowing a cooling-down period of an hour or so between runs.
